On the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis’s death (1226–2026), this lecture invites us on a journey through images to rediscover Francis as a saint on the road, as Dante also portrays him in the Divine Comedy. For Francis, the imitation of Christ takes two forms: sharing in his Passion, made visible in the stigmata, and following Christ on the road, crossing boundaries and encountering others. In 1219, during the Crusades, he crosses the Mediterranean to meet the Sultan in Egypt, carrying the Gospel with him. His courage to move, to encounter the other, and to enter into dialogue makes him a saint for this millennium.
